A Weekly Educated Movie Recommendation by Shaun Smith

Way before his movies were filled with small creatures with big feet or giant monkeys in New York, Peter Jackson made splatter flicks out of his native New Zealand.

Dead Alive, aka Braindead in some countries, is one of his earlier “horror” films. I say “horror” since it’s almost a pseudo-comedy at the same time.

Dead Alive stars a bunch of nobodies from New Zealand, yet the main character bears a striking resemblance to the guy from District 9. Coincidence?

Basically the film is an over-the-top zombie flick which numerous gore gags. In fact Jackson uses blood and gore for comedy within the film.

Like most recent zombie flicks, the virus is started with a rabid animal which in this case is a giant rubber rat.

The gags are what really sells the movie, especially the lawnmower scene (trust me you will know it when you see it).

Now this movie is not for everyone. Some of the New Zealand dialects, although spoken in English, is at times hard to understand.

Not to mention some could find the gore not very amusing if they have a queasy stomach.

But if you’re looking for a fun gore filled movie with little plot and great gags then I recommend Dead Alive.

  1. […] I mention this film is incredibly gory? After the last Friday Flicks selection and this one, I think next week’s pick needs to be […]
