You can’t justify Boeheim after the Paterno drama

By: Vin D’Anton

Shocker, it has happened again, something illegal in the NCAA and Syracuse basketball is in the spotlight once again in a short span.

First in November 2011, it was former Asst. Coach Bernie Fine’s sexual abuse allegation on young boys, which coincidentally came out shortly after the Jerry Sandusky mess. As the Penn State football season was coming to an end, Joe Paterno announced he would retire at seasons end, but obviously the school did otherwise.

Paterno was fired before the regular season finale against Nebraska.

Syracuse Men’s Basketball will play the Game 5 winner on Thursday and are the number one seed in The Big East Tournament this season.  It has been a great season for the number two team in the nation under head coach Jim Boeheim who is in his 35th season.

A report from Yahoo! Sports yesterday said after a three month investigation, four sources with knowledge of the program told the site that Syracuse has done wrong again.

It is said at least ten players since 2001 have tested positive for a banned recreational substance or substances. The sources also said ten of those players were allowed to practice and play at times when they should have been suspended by the athletic department and obviously weren’t.

The sources added the Orangemen violated its drug policy in at least two areas: failing to properly count positive tests; and playing ineligible players after they should have been suspended.

The rest of article is here.

The ever honest and kind Boeheim had this to say to Yahoo! when asked for comment; “I don’t know anything about it,” Boeheim said. “I would not comment on anything like that. Good luck with your story.”

As far as we know, Paterno’s players were always clean and there were never allegations of something like this. All Joe Pa had was kids who he cared about on and off the field and made sure they were good people before they were good football people.

With both of these allegations coming in one season, there is now way to justify Boeheim still having a job. In this process, Syracuse just keeps making themselves look bad and the punishments for this should be severe because it is cheating. If illegal recruiting is cheating, recreational substances are also.

Reports are that this happened during the 2002-’03 season as well; Boeheim’s only National Title. If these reports are true, and they most likely are…take away the championship…take away Boeheim’s job.
