Bad winter ahead for the 2011-2012 winter season

Franklin Twp., NJ – According to The National Weather Service, it is going to be another brutal winter for the U.S. While New Jersey isn’t predicted to be as bad as the Midwest and Great Lakes, the Philadelphia area is predicted to get about 30” inches of snow. Franklin Township has had pretty bad snowstorms the past two years, including over twenty inches last year. Not everyone was happy with the job they did.

“They didn’t do very well at all. Our streets were plowed in about 24 hours, but they did a bad job plowing. Streets were blocked and some streets weren’t even fully done,” said Dan Griffin of Franklinville. “The county roads were all done right away, but some neighborhoods were terrible,” Griffin said.

Griffin, a Union truck driver, has more to worry about than just his neighborhood. “Sure, I have been doing it for a while, but it gets scary out there. We luck out sometimes because if it starts overnight, we just stay in at the warehouse and work there. If it starts while or right before we are driving, it’s a scary trip,” Griffin said. He also added that besides slippery roads, it causes traffic and then deadlines for deliveries are not met.

Maybe the lack of plowing is a question of man power. With loads of layoffs and budget cuts, it is tough to get a lot of plowmen on the road.

“Maybe if the town uses other types of workers like mechanics or other jobs and train them to plow, we can use them. So when things like this happen, you are prepared. It is more money for a worker so you wonder if they would like the idea,” Griffin said.

Mayor Pat Dougherty and Deputy Mayor Joseph Petsch did not respond to a phone call seeking comment.
